PORT VISITS

Aksaz Naval Base Turkey

USS DallasThe Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Dallas (SSN-700) recently visited Aksaz Naval Base in Turkey to conduct training operations in support of the triennial NATO submarine escape and rescue exercise SORBET ROYAL 2000. Dallas carried the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle Mystic (DSRV-1) and participated in a variety of training evolutions with rescue specialists and associated naval units from Italy, Turkey, and the United States.

Askaz Naval Base is located near the ancient Turkish city of Marmaris on the Aegean coast of Anatolia, just north of the island of Rhodes. Marmaris is the focal point of a particularly attractive section of Turkey's Mediterranean coastline, where a myriad of coves, inlets, and small villages offer fishing, water sports, and sailing. Backed by pine-clad mountains and breathtaking scenery, the region is a favorite international vacation spot and offers great opportunities for liberty. The city itself boasts several fine examples of Ottoman architecture from the reign of the sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, as well as interesting mosques, parks, and markets.
