Awake At Night
We all experience those sleepless nights when heavy thoughts and deep concerns burden our minds and refuse to let us slumber. The ORSE is in three days; we are on the AUTEC range tomorrow; qualification board coming up... Having recently reported from the fleet to the Pentagon, I quickly realized that the issues that keep the submarine sailor at sea awake at night are typically much different than those issues that haunt the submarine force decision-makers. Among other things, their thoughts concentrate on shaping the future submarine force, improving the quality of life of their submariners and how the limited funds that are appropriated by Congress should be distributed.

The discussion of what the fleet sailor perceives as the salient issues that keep, or should keep, the leaders of the submarine force awake at night provides an interesting topic. It also provides a tool to bridge that gap between the fleet and the staffs that do not always see the same issues with the same level of concern. I am interested in providing a forum in the Undersea Warfare magazine that will allow submariners from all commands, and all levels of the Chain of Command, to discuss what they feel are the pressing issues that should be keeping our Admirals awake at night. I invite all readers to provide their thoughts to be published in future issues of Undersea Warfare Magazine.
